More than one out of three adults has prediabetes. Nine out of ten of them, don’t know it.
Prediabetes means your blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Without intervention, prediabetes can become type 2 diabetes in 10 years or less.
Here’s the good news: Healthy lifestyle changes can help prevent or delay prediabetes from turning into diabetes.
Step one: know the risks
You may be at risk to develop diabetes if you:
Are 45 years of age or older.
Have a family history of type 2 diabetes.
Have high blood pressure.
Exercise less than three times per week.
Ever had diabetes while pregnant (gestational diabetes) or gave birth to a baby that weighed more than nine pounds.
