It’s recommended that adults, ages 26-64, get on average 7-9 hours of sleep a night. That can be a challenge for many of us, but a goal worth striving for. Sleep has a major impact on your mental and physical health.
Here’s why it’s a good idea to get some extra ZZZZs:
Better weight control. If you don’t get enough sleep, you may not have the energy to work out or make a healthy meal. Plus, sleep loss can decrease the hormone leptin that triggers that fullness feeling you get after eating. The result? You’re hungrier, which invites cravings for high-fat, high-calorie foods.
Better health. Although enough sleep isn’t the cure-all for disease, it can help. Sleep studies show that lack of sleep is linked to serious health issues like diabetes, heart disease and obesity.
Better memory. While you sleep, much of the information you take in during the day is processed and stored. If you don’t get enough sleep, some of this information could get lost. A good night’s sleep can help you retain information better and keep you more alert. Tips for better sleep:
Practice good sleep hygiene. Remove TVs and clock lights from the bedroom. Avoid screen time 1 to 2 hours before bedtime.
Ask your doctor if you can take melatonin, a natural sleep aid, to improve restfulness.
