Heart disease. Lung cancer. Emphysema. Stroke. Most tobacco users know the dangers of smoking and chewing tobacco but have trouble quitting. Nicotine causes a very strong addiction. So quitting is tough, as are the effects of quitting – depression, anxiety, irritability and weight gain. But it’s important to remember that the side effects do go away in time. And a tobacco-free life can happen one day at a time.
Why it’s important to stop using tobacco
Tobacco products harm your health. The most common way people use tobacco is through smoking. This increases their risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, emphysema, bronchitis and many more health problems. In fact, one of the best ways you can avoid getting cancer is to not smoke.
It’s not just smokers who are harmed. The chemicals in inhaled tobacco smoke have been found in secondhand smoke, too. Nonsmokers exposed to secondhand smoke are at higher risk for lung cancer and coronary heart disease. Children exposed to tobacco smoke have higher risks of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), ear and respiratory infections and asthma.
If at first you don’t succeed...
If you quit tobacco but started again, don’t get down on yourself. People who quit smoking often start again in the first few weeks after quitting. Most people who kicked their bad habit for good had to try many times before it stuck. Take it in stages. Focus on the first 24 hours of quitting. The next 24 hours may be easier – and maybe another 24 hours after that. Keep in mind: People who quit for three or more months have a great chance of staying that way for the rest of their lives!
Make quitting easier
Most health problems linked to tobacco can be reduced by stopping smoking or chewing – even after many years of use. It’s never too late to quit. You don’t have to quit on sheer will power alone. Try tools and techniques that others have used successfully to stop using tobacco. Here are some:
Other methods such as acupressure, acupuncture, hypnosis and laser therapy
